Theory Test & Hazard Perception

Before you can take your practical driving test you will need to prove that you have a sound knowledge of the theory of driving.

From 3rd September 2007 the Theory Test will comprise of 50 multiple choice questions, with a pass mark of 43.  The Theory Test is examined by the candidate (you) using a ‘touch screen’ computer.  The screens are easy to read - only one question appears on the screen at a time, and you can to move backwards and forwards through the questions.  You can also go back to any questions which you want to look at again, and it's easy to change any answers. The system also alerts you if you have not completely answered a question.
You will be allowed 57 minutes to complete the theory test before you progress to the Hazard Perception element of the test.
You can try some theory test questions by clicking here, have a search on the internet yourself – there are loads of places where you can find sample questions to try!  Follow this link to see products available to help you to study for your Theory Test.

For the Hazard Perception element of the test fourteen video clips are shown.  You have to indicate awareness of developing hazards as soon as the development is (correctly) perceived by clicking the mouse on the computer.

A sophisticated algorithm detects regular, indiscriminate clicking of the mouse and the program "knows" a window of opportunity around each developing hazard.
The earliest response gives the 'driver' 5 points; as the hazard develops, the points go down to zero.

The "scoring window" opens when the first clue to the development of an otherwise 'benign' hazard is visible and closes when an Examiner would have to record a Serious Fault.

Many of the clips may well contain more than one developing hazard and you must keep concentrating, don’t treat it like a video game.  Make sure you continuously "drive the clip".  As a Learner Driver you will need to score 44 on the Hazard Perception element of the test to pass.

Over the series of clips the total possible score is 75

So how is this right when 14(clips) x 5(points) is 70? One of the clips will contain more than one scored "developing hazard" therefore a possible 10 points can be obtained on one clip.

Books can’t really help you with this element of your test, there are however a number of CD-ROMS and DVD’s that you can buy to help.  Ask me during your lesson for more info.

Remember – You cannot book you Practical Driving Test appointment without a Pass Certificate number to quote.  If you fail either the Theory Test or the Hazard Perception Part you will have to re-sit both.  You will receive your results before you leave the test centre.
