Notes for Parents and Supervising Drivers
When you agree to accompany a learner driver you are taking on a big responsibility and it should not be taken lightly. You will be helping your learner to get the all important extra practise that they need.
When I say ‘practise’ I mean that you should be helping the learner to gain extra experience of the roads and different situations that occur. Accompanying a learner should not replace good professional tuition.
You MUST make sure that YOU have the right license and that the car that you’ll be going out with the learner in is correctly insured. You will also need to ensure that the car has L-Plates displayed clearly at the front and back and has an additional interior mirror (Halfords website) so YOU can check what’s going on behind.
* DO NOT put the L-Plates onto either the front or rear screens of the car, you will impair both your vision of the road and your learners. Also you MUST ensure that the L-Plates are removed from the vehicle once the learner is not driving. It is illegal for a fully qualified motorist to drive with L-Plates displayed on the vehicle.
When you accompany a learner YOU are responsible for THEIR actions. You need to make sure that you can stay calm and offer any advice when needed. It’s really important to speak to your learners instructor before taking them out, so that you can decide what needs to be practised.
It may be difficult to accept, but some things may have changed since you learnt to drive and it can be confusing for the learner to receive different information from their instructor and their supervising driver.
Try to remember to keep a record of time spent practicing and what sort of things you’ve practised when you’ve both been out driving. This can be shared with your learners instructor to see where more time needs to be spent and more practise is required.
Please also remember that you cannot receive a payment for any time that you spend helping your learner to practise. This includes payment towards fuel. The only people who can accept payment for driving tuition are Approved Driving Instructors (ADI), or trainees who hold a Trainee Licence (PDI).
You might also find it very useful to look at the official guide from the DSA that shows you how to help a learner practise the skills needed to pass the practical driving test.
