Before Your First Lesson
Although lessons and practise are the most important elements of learning to drive, there are lots of things that you can do to help you when you’re not in the car. There are loads of electronic products and books on the market to assist with all stages of driving – theory, hazard perception and practical.
Make sure you’ve had a good look at the “Highway Code” before attending your first lesson. It contains essential knowledge and rules for all road users, especially drivers. You should be familiar with the rules as a driver the first time you drive, not just before taking the Driving Test.
As your instructor I will test your knowledge of the “Highway Code” from time to time and I will also be able to recommend or supply other training and learning materials.
Some essential purchases I would recommend to help you with your studies are:

“The Highway Code” (see here for online version) (ISBN 0115526986 approx £1.99) ‘The Official DSA Guide to Learning To Drive’ (ISBN 011552858X approx £7.99) “The Official DSA Guide to Driving The Essential Skills” (ISBN 0115526412 approx £12.99) “Know Your Traffic Signs” (ISBN 0115516123 approx £3) |

All of the above books are published by The Stationary Office but can also be purchased from most good book stores, or I can get copies for you and let you have them when I see you for a lesson.
For your Theory Training it is worthwhile getting “The Official Theory Test for Car Drivers.” It’s a great book as it not only contains all of the questions and answers, but it tells you why the answer is right and cross references the questions with other similar ones.
